Healing, Writing & Reimagining Black Masculinity with JoΓ©l Leon

JoΓ©l L. Daniels, also known as JoΓ©l Leon, is a Bronx-born storyteller, poet, and author deeply committed to his roles as a girl dad and an advocate for Black liberation. His latest book, Everything and Nothing at Once: A Black Man's Reimagined Soundtrack for the Future, published in June 2024, is a compelling collection of essays that delves into Black masculinity and envisions new possibilities for the future of Black men. In his work, JoΓ©l draws from his journey from a Bronx childhood to self-discovery through Buddhism, highlighting the profound impact of vulnerability, radical love, and poetry in the healing process. He emphasizes the vital role of community in providing support and accountability. Through personal anecdotes and insights into mindfulness and accessible healing practices, particularly within Black and Brown communities, JoΓ©l illustrates the transformative power of language and collective liberation.

β€œYes, it's aimed toward Black men. But I really want folks to recognize that it's for all of us. It speaks to Black men because I am a Black man. I wanted to make sure that experience was honoredβ€”it needed to be. But so much of the work, for me, in wanting to reimagine, came from seeing so many of us, whether folks I knew or those I was connected to through others, and realizing there were stories not being told. Especially my own storyβ€”how I grew up, how I came upβ€”wasn't being told in the ways I knew I could tell it.

That reimagining started with me. If I can reimagine it for myself, it creates an opportunity to reimagine it for others as well.”
