“Midwives in the United States and Europe were actually seen as witches a hundred years ago and burned at the stake. […] Midwives were giving people herbs and helping women experience less pain during childbirth. In Christianity, particularly in the Bible, it was believed that women should suffer pain in childbirth, which contributed to midwives being viewed as witches. It goes way back to that history. The United States pretty much wiped out midwifery, while Europe continued to rely on midwives. […] Because midwifery was wiped out in the United States, there had to be a resurgence. Ina May Gaskin, the author of Spiritual Midwifery, worked on a commune and helped bring midwifery back into public awareness. It's been slowly growing since then, but there’s still a lot of misunderstanding about what midwives do and who we are. And then there are the insurance companies, which often refuse to pay us, as if that’s an acceptable option. But it isn’t.”

“I think there’s a lot of power in doodling. My work is very doodle-based, so I think that could be a great daily practice—just getting out of your own head, taking a page, and trying to fill it. There’s something really valuable about the act of filling a page, where you’re not thinking about anything else except, How can I do this? I do it every day.

And it doesn’t even have to be anything specific. A lot of times, when I’m struggling with a concept or an idea, I’ll literally just draw a line next to a line, over and over. Then I’ll switch it up—add a squiggle or something. That process alone can be really freeing.

For people who say they can’t draw, this is a great exercise. You are drawing, and you’re only going to improve the more you make marks, repeat them, and experiment with new ones. The key is just showing up to the page every day."
